Iris Brosch is a renowned photographer, film director, and performance artist whose multidisciplinary practice spans fashion photography, film, and participatory performance. Based between Europe and the United States, her work explores themes of identity, gender, beauty, and the relationship between humanity and nature, often through a feminist and socially engaged lens.
Brosch’s fashion photography and portraiture have been widely published in leading international publications including Vogue, Vanity Fair, The New York Times, L’Uomo Vogue, Marie Claire, Elle, and Harper’s Bazaar. She has collaborated with major global brands such as Hugo Boss, Pantene, Tommy Hilfiger, Escada, Maybelline, Jaguar, Lancel, Campari, and Renault. Her subjects have included Claudia Schiffer, Sophie Dahl, Benedict Cumberbatch, Carlos Acosta, Shere Hite, Eva Padberg, and Heidi Klum.
A pioneer of the genre she terms “photo performance,” Brosch expands the boundaries of image-making by transforming the traditionally closed set of fashion production into a live, participatory experience. By incorporating non-professional models and inviting audience engagement, she challenges conventional ideals of beauty and authorship, emphasizing individuality, inclusivity, and collective creation.
Her landmark multimedia performance “Divinita: The Birth of the Black Venus,” presented at the Venice Biennale in 2005, introduced her concept of a “female Gesamtkunstwerk,” merging photography, film, fashion, music, and dance into a unified experiential work. Subsequent projects, including “Erotic Enlightenment” (2009), “Women and Nature” (2013), and “L’Uomo” (2014), further investigate evolving constructions of femininity and masculinity, as well as the connection between the human body and the natural world.
In 2017, Brosch was commissioned by the state of Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, to create a large-scale photo performance marking the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. In 2019, she presented “Gaia” at the Center for Hellenic Studies at Harvard University, exploring ecological consciousness through mythological symbolism. More recently, in 2022, she premiered her film “Trilogy: A Warning for the 21st Century” at Les Rencontres d’Arles, addressing urgent global issues including climate change, technological expansion, and human disconnection. That same year, she presented “Feminism, Faith, and Future,” a performance examining the intersection of spirituality and gender equality.
Across her practice, Brosch interrogates societal constructs surrounding gender, body image, and identity, advocating for a more expansive and inclusive understanding of beauty and selfhood. In addition to her artistic work, she is actively engaged in mentorship and educational initiatives, supporting emerging artists and fostering dialogue around art as a vehicle for social change.
