Kate Tova is a visual artist living and working in the mountains of Monterey, California, with roots in both Russia and Ukraine. She grew up in the small industrial town of Balakovo, Russia, where her passion for art began in childhood. She studied at the local Academy of Art and later transitioned to painting professionally, and exhibiting her work internationally. Kate has been a full-time artist since 2017, two years after moving to the United States. She completed an art residency at the School of Visual Arts in New York City and has exhibited at the Oceanside Museum of Art and the Monterey Museum of Art, and numerous other institutions. She was featured as a spotlight artist in a Cadillac commercial and on the cover of San Francisco Magazine and ArtScene Magazine. A passionate supporter of charitable organizations, Kate uses her art to raise awareness and advocate for causes related to women’s rights, animal welfare, and the environment.
"My art explores the interconnections between people, nature, and ancestral roots. I’m constantly experimenting and adapting my materials to the subjects I paint - from applying oil and soil to linen, to working with discarded clothing. My compositions often feature vibrant colors and lush plants and flowers, as being surrounded by them empowers me and offers comfort and a sense of home. Each day, living in the mountains by the Pacific Ocean, I’m reminded of nature’s quiet generosity. I draw strength and inspiration from my Ukrainian roots, culture, and its reverence for the natural world. My recent body of work is deeply research-driven and centers on Ukrainian culture, people, and rituals. Through my art, I aim to preserve what is under threat, amplify silenced voices, and educate the public about Ukraine’s rich cultural heritage and enduring resilience. With my work, I hope to inspire environmental protection, strengthen connections to our ancestors, and nurture a sense of peace and healing." - Kate Tova
