Lisa Levy is a conceptual artist, comedic performer, and self-proclaimed psychotherapist whose multidisciplinary practice merges text-based painting, endurance performance, and satire to explore insecurity, vulnerability, and cultural anxiety. Working at the intersection of visual art and comedy, Levy transforms self-doubt into subject matter, using humor as both shield and scalpel.
Her work has been widely exhibited at institutions and art fairs including The New Museum, The Bronx Museum, SPRING/BREAK Art Fair, Pulse Art Fair Miami, and The Brooklyn Academy of Music, among numerous galleries and exhibitions internationally. Her artist multiples are available through Printed Matter, Open Editions, and Fuse Works. Levy’s work has been featured in publications including The New York Times, The London Times, Time Out New York, The Daily Beast, The New York Post, Artnet, Hyperallergic, Whitewall, and ARTnews. Her ongoing text-based painting series, “The Thoughts in My Head,” has been exhibited widely and is held in numerous collections. A monograph of the series, “The Thoughts in My Head,” was recently published by ArtVoices Press.
As a live performer, Levy is widely known for her alter ego Dr. Lisa, the self-proclaimed psychotherapist. She hosts the weekly radio show and podcast “Dr. Lisa Gives a Sh*t” on Radio Free Brooklyn, conducting humorous yet emotionally revealing “therapy sessions” with creative guests. Her performances have taken place at The Brooklyn Museum, The Brooklyn Academy of Music, Joe’s Pub, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. For her send-up of Marina Abramović’s “The Artist Is Present,” titled “The Artist is Humbly Present,” Levy sat naked on a toilet for two days, garnering international attention. Levy has exhibited extensively at The Untitled Space, including “UPRISE 2025: The Art of Resistance” (10th Anniversary Group Show), “SKYE CLEARY NEVER GETS OLD” (2024), and “BODY BEAUTIFUL” (2019).
