Artist Statement:

"The tension between reality and deception running through my works guides my interest in artifice. Flora and fauna are recurring elements of my work. Yet, these biomorphic scenes feel closer to a staged hallucination than the natural world; flower petals gleam as if they were made of plastic, stems curl with impossible elasticity, and colors are so saturated they verge on being toxic. Rather than using flowers as decoration, I treat them as symbolic, bodily presences—sites where cultural expectations of femininity (beauty, delicacy, desirability) are constructed, rehearsed, and, ultimately, resisted.

My practice is deeply informed by art history, for which I hold a BA. I’m equally drawn to artists from both the East and the West; I borrow the graphic clarity of Japanese ukiyo-e prints and combine it with the allegorical world-building compositions of Dutch masters like Bosch. This fusion of influences mirrors my Occidental/Oriental background as both Chinese and Canadian. The at-times conflicted, at-times symbiotic relationship between these two cultural inheritances feeds my preoccupation with artifice, unease, and perception." - Angela Wei
