Joanne Agabs "Lap Swim No. 2"

Joanne Agabs is an artist working in various visual arts media. Creating a personal narrative by visually recording her space and time has been at the core of Joanne's practice. Born in Singapore, Joanne spent much of her childhood in Singapore, Japan and Thailand drawing and painting alongside her mother, a professional printmaker. Today, Joanne lives in New York City with her husband and two children. In addition to creating her work she has developed and teaches a series of art workshops and after school art classes to elementary school aged children.

"I currently work primarily with watercolor, a medium that allows me to express the deep intimacy I share with the inhabitants of my city and the rhythms of my daily life. The candid figures in my paintings and drawings—captured in moments of pause or motion—reflect the dynamism and constant evolution of New York. I strive to preserve fleeting moments that, though often quotidian, feel both compelling and essential. With precision and attention to detail, I build each piece to evoke a delicate atmosphere, from tree-lined avenues to vibrant street vendors and beyond.
