Janet Pulcho (Zhanna Pulcho) is a contemporary Ukrainian watercolor artist based in Florence, Italy. She is widely recognized for her large-scale floral paintings that challenge the traditional perception of watercolor as a fragile and secondary medium.
Pulcho has been working with watercolor for over thirteen years, developing a distinctive approach that combines monumental scale, refined realism, and abstract backgrounds. Flowers are the central subject of her practice — not as decorative elements, but as expressive forms that convey movement, emotional depth, and inner balance. Through the contrast between realistic floral imagery and abstract space, she explores the dialogue between control and spontaneity, strength and delicacy.
She holds a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the Odessa State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture, where she developed a strong foundation in realistic painting and fell deeply in love with watercolor. At the age of 24, she became the youngest member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine.
After relocating to Italy, Janet continued her studies at the Florence Academy of Art, immersing herself in the history of Italian art. The influence of Renaissance painting — its compositional harmony, sense of scale, and emotional resonance — became a turning point in her artistic development. This experience led to the creation of a new body of work in which she analyzes and reinterprets Renaissance masterpieces through the prism of monumental floral compositions.
Pulcho works exclusively with professional watercolor pigments, combining alla prima techniques with layered detailing to achieve depth, transparency, and lasting vibrancy.
In addition to her studio practice, she actively participates in international exhibitions, collaborates with brands, and conducts watercolor workshops and masterclasses, sharing her contemporary approach to the medium with an international audience.

Artist Statement:

"For 13 years, I have been exploring the watercolor technique and its possibilities to implement my ideas in giant formats. When I was studying at the Art Academy in Ukraine, I felt that watercolor became my main technique, my imagination allowed me to imagine stage by stage how to paint in this technique. I feel like a shaman when I paint my realistic flowers with abstract backgrounds in watercolor. With such an opposite style, I try to find the balance. In my artistic endeavors, I exclusively employ professional watercolor pigments, a deliberate choice ensuring the enduring vibrancy of hues over time. The alaprima technique, coupled with layered detailing, forms the crux of my approach. Undoubtedly, the transition from Ukraine to Italy had a profound impact on me. I continued my studies at the Florence Academy of Art to fully immerse myself in the history of Italian art. The abundance of museums and an extensive collection of Renaissance paintings played a pivotal role in initiating a new phase of my creative journey.
I began a new series of works in which, through the prism of my giant flower compositions, I analyze the works of the great masters of the Renaissance."
