Andrea Ferrigno (b. Des Moines, Iowa) is an American painter whose work explores the intersection of geometry, architecture, and embodied experience. Working in abstraction with subtle references to figuration, Ferrigno investigates scientific and mathematical systems that describe the natural world, using geometry as the foundation of her visual language. Through layered spatial constructions, she creates paintings that oscillate between monumentality and intimacy, inviting viewers into a dynamic dialogue between interior space, volumetric form, and surface flatness.
Ferrigno received her MFA from the University of Iowa, where she was awarded the Mildred Pelzner-Lynch Fellowship, and a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. She has presented solo exhibitions at The American University of Paris, Mount Mary University (Milwaukee), and Knox College. Her work has also been featured in group exhibitions at Blue Mountain Gallery (New York), The Painting Center (New York), Site: Brooklyn (New York), The Peoria Riverfront Museum (Illinois), The St. Louis Artist Guild, and The Figge Museum (Davenport, Iowa), among others.
She was awarded the Helen Longmire Prize for her painting “Turning Time” at The St. Louis Artist Guild. Her work has been published in Art Maze Magazine, New American Paintings, Studio Visit, and Visual Overture. Her writing has appeared in Whitehot Magazine of Contemporary Art. Ferrigno’s paintings are held in public and private collections, including Fidelity Investments and The American University of Paris.
She has been an invited artist-in-residence at The Virginia Center for Creative Arts (VCCA), The Vermont Studio Center, DRAWinternational (Caylus, France), and Relais Camont and Moulin à Nef (VCCA, France). Ferrigno currently serves as Chair and Associate Professor of Art at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois.
Artist Statement
“My work has stemmed from a desire to understand the scientific and mathematical systems used to describe the natural world's forms and workings. Systems such as geometry are the foundation of my visual language. Through my work, I aim to reconcile the geometric, analytic worldview with my embodied experience. I flirt with figuration and the body’s relationship to architectural space and structures, creating a looping experience between perceived interior space, volumetric form, and the painting's flatness. I want my work to have a sense of monumentality and intimacy. My use of color is informed by memory and emotion.”
