Shanna Cox is a self-taught contemporary figurative oil painter based in Venice, California. Her work explores identity, embodiment, and psychological tension within an increasingly mediated, digitally saturated landscape. Moving between high- and low-resolution imagery and the real and artificial, Cox examines how digital experience reshapes self-perception and connection.

Cox turned to painting after a career as a strategy advisor. Since 2024, her work has been exhibited in a range of shows, including at the Long Beach Museum of Art and The Brea Gallery, where she received second place for California Dreaming. She lives and paints in Venice, California.

Artist Statement

"This body of work looks at the gap between the body we live in and the self we build online. The figures feel caught between being present in the room but also performing for a screen.

At the center is the idea of a digital twin: the version of us that exists online. That version doesn't update as fast as we do. We end up represented by an old version of ourselves, and people treat it as current.

Visually, this shows up as high-res against low-res, digital against physical, real against artificial - the two sides sitting side by side, unresolved." - Shanna Cox
