Leslie Sheryll spent her childhood in New York City, where she developed a passion for photography while attending Manhattan’s High School of Art and Design. She went on to earn her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. Throughout her professional career, she has worked in various roles within the fashion and photography industries, while her photography has been featured in a wide range of publications and group exhibitions across Europe and the United States.
Sheryll’s honors and achievements include being a finalist for the 2025 New Jersey State Council on the Arts Grant, receiving a 2024 Monmouth Museum New Jersey Emerging Artist Solo Exhibition, and the 2020 International Photography Exhibition Royal Photographic Society Selectors Spotlight Award in Bristol, England. She was also a recipient of the 2018 Julia Margaret Cameron Award for Women Photographers and the 2018 PORTALS Grand Prize, juried by Darren Ching of Klompching Gallery. In 2018, her work was also included in The Photography Gala Awards: Women Seen by Women.
“Lately, I have been having the most vivid dreams. One after another, night after night.
I find that I get ideas for my work early, just after a dream before I’m truly conscious before I’ve opened my eyes. Lately, I’ve been influenced by The Hearing Trumpet, a surrealist novel that I’ve recently read by Leonore Carrington. The book seems to weave between the conscious and unconscious world.
I often incorporate Botanical Illustrations in my imagery. During the 19th century botany was one of the few pastimes women were allowed to pursue outside of the home. I use botany as a metaphor for resilience. In this image I use the nepenthe plant. This carnivorous plant mentioned in the Odyssey was believed to be a magic potion capable of banishing grief or trouble from the mind." - Leslie Sheryll
