Alexandra Jansen is an analogue photographer based in Sydney, Australia, known for her surreal in-camera double exposures exploring themes of nostalgic escapism. Created entirely in-camera on 35mm film and relying on natural light, her work emerged from a longing for the carefree pleasures of simpler times and an imagined escape into freedom during a period of isolation and illness. Jansen’s work has been shortlisted for the Royal Photographic Society International Photography Exhibition 167 and is held in private collections internationally.

Artist Statement:

“This series of surreal 35mm film in-camera double exposures explores fleeting daydreams of leisure and celebration by the sea. The works invite viewers into immersive worlds of luxury, pleasure, and escapism, while the analogue double exposure process blurs reality through an idealistic lens.
 
 My work was born out of daydreams of nostalgic escapism during a time when I faced a difficult reality beyond my control. The surreal compositions created through analogue double exposures highlight the mind’s ability to transform reality into a fleeting utopia, where longing becomes a temporary space of freedom, beauty, and hope.
 
 The work reflects daydreams as a form of escape, where imagination can reshape lived experience and create worlds that offer refuge beyond the constraints of reality. The images capture carefree summer days filled with long lunches, laughter, and moments of connection by the sea, reflecting an idealised yet fleeting world that exists between memory and imagination."
