Tatana Kellner was born in Czechoslovakia, where she grew up under the communist system as a daughter of Holocaust survivors. That upbringing has shaped her as an artist and as a human being. Kellner is interested in history and memory as central to our understanding of the world. She is a visual artist who works in installation, drawing, photography and artist books. She uses these media to explore the visual realm and comment on social and political issues. She has exhibited across the USA, Canada and Europe, with over 30 solo exhibitions. Recently, her work has been selected for exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Tallahassee, FL, the Everson Museum, University of Albany, Dorsky Museum, Bowdoin College, Rockland Center for the Arts, Albany Institute for History and Art, Vassar College, Bevier Gallery and RIT, among many others. Kellner was selected to participate in the MARK NYFA Program and is the recipient the Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant, as well as two awards from the Puffin Foundation. Additional awards include: two New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships, two Photographer’s Fund Awards from the Center for Photography at Woodstock and the Ruth Chenven Foundation Grant. Kellner has been awarded residencies at numerous venues, most notably The MacDowell Colony, Banff Centre for the Arts, Saltonstall Art Colony, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and Foundacion Valparaiso, among others. Kellner is a co-founder of Women’s Studio Workshop, an artist workspace providing opportunities and support to women artists from around the world.
