Born in 1991, Kelly Shami is a first-generation American artist of Syrian and Lebanese descent, living and working in New York City. Shami was born in Hackensack, New Jersey. As a daughter of immigrants, she started working from a young age as a part-time florist and as a retail associate at her father's jewelry store in the Diamond District of NYC. After showing a strong passion for arts at an early age, she completed every academic art course possible until moving to New York to get her degree in fine arts. She completed her B.F.A. from The School of Visual Arts in New York City in 2013. After working various creative jobs around New York, she was able to expand her painting practice in 2018 when she rented a studio in Queens. Her work focuses on themes from her childhood to now adulthood and her strong interest in the world and romantics of Surrealism. During her art history studies at school, she learned about the ideals of Surrealism, especially with women being seen as an object or "muse" and never the creator herself. She focused on the many women of surrealism including influences like Dorothea Tanning, Leonora Carrington, and Frida Kahlo who are today some of her main inspirations.
