Three roses in their prime are presented as an adoration of beauty, placed in a vase and balanced on a rocky cliff. Pulling from the lush coverage of rosa rugosa bushes all around coastal New England, I chose to depict this delicate “beach rose” in a setting it does not normally occupy. I plucked them from the place where they naturally grow and placed them on display, in a situation where they could be admired. Their prickly thorns can be seen through the glass, but shield the admirer from any harm their defenses might cause. They are meant to be appreciated for their beauty, while simultaneously showing their strength and fragility.

The apple tree branches refer back to a series of paintings where I explore relationships through the story of Adam and Eve. Taking the figures out of the composition still leaves temptation as the viewer looks upwards toward a ripe apple ready to be plucked. The bright blue sky comes in contrast to earlier uses of red to offer a more enticing scene for the viewer." - Heather V Mcleod

Learn more about her artwork and exhibitions on our website.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0281/6235/9378/files/HeatherVMcLeodTheThreeGracesII24x20_TheUntitledSpace.jpg?v=1777330315
