Born in Tokyo, Japan, Kumi Kaguraoka is an artist and a specially-appointed adjunct professor at Tokyo University of the Arts. In 2012, Kaguraoka completed a Master of Fine Arts in Scenography, Display, and Fashion Design at Musashino Art University. After graduating, she worked for a toy design company as an art director for product planning and exhibition design. Kaguraoka began her professional career as an artist in 2015, creating research-based works that draw on the premise that the body is a tool to communicate with the world. The same year, Kaguraoka was selected to exhibit her work as a resident artist at BankART1929. She has won the Grand Prix in the SICF 16 and debuted solo exhibitions at Seibu Sogo Shibuya, a Japanese department store, in 2019 and 2022. Kaguraoka is also a recipient of the Junya Yamamine Award from Kyoto University and London University’s International Symposium. Recently, she has been interviewed by Vogue and Numero Berlin, with multiple publications deeming her a recommended artist. Kaguraoka currently resides in New York.
