Originally from Ghana, George Afedzi Hughes studied painting at The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology’s College of Art, where he earned a BA in Art Painting and Drawing in 1989 and an MA in Art Education in 1991. He later received an MFA in Painting and Drawing from Bowling Green State University. The artist moved to England in 1991 and finally settled in the United States in 1994 after the major solo exhibition he created in London was displayed in Accra, Ghana at The Artists Alliance Gallery. Since moving to the United States, he has taught art at The University of Toledo (1997-2001), Bowling Green State University (1999-2000), and The University of Oklahoma (2001-2006), and is currently at SUNY at Buffalo (2006-present). His paintings, performances, and installations have been shown in Germany, Portugal, England, Holland, China, Denmark, France, Nigeria, South Africa, and Ghana.

“My paintings explore the parallels between the negative effects of colonial history and contemporary global conflicts, using sports and popular culture imagery to reveal the politics of identity, power relations, and racial reconciliation. ‘Bulgey’ (2022) represents an imaginative character with multiple personalities, cultures, and fashion within a cosmopolitan environment. The piece bridges the differences within dissimilar phenomenons and emphasizes the common experiences shared between people of the same culture.”
