Emma Hapner studied at the New York Academy of Art, receiving her Master of Fine Arts with a concentration in Painting. Originally from Indiana, Hapner received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Ball State University. She works primarily with oil paint on canvas, creating figurative works that reclaim the language of classical painting from a woman’s perspective.

“To me, the color pink is a symbol of unapologetic femininity. I paint my figures in pink worlds and look to motifs of classical antiquity to celebrate traditional painting from my perspective: A woman seeking to understand the intricacies of womanhood. My paintings focus on the duality of womanhood that I have experienced and often repeat the use of the same person to create a multifaceted portrait that conveys a complex sense of individual identity. Their evolving representations signify the different roles women often assume and the ways women are perceived sexually, motherly, or youthfully. I hope to embrace these complexities while critiquing the need for their existence. I am inspired by lyrical compositions from artists like Pontormo and Caravaggio and use traditional oil painting techniques to reimagine classical scenes through a feminist lens. The figures in my paintings often gaze directly outwards, confronting the viewer and claiming agency. Embracing my love of pink is important to me as a woman and as an artist.  By immersing multiple figures in a hot pink space, I hope to depict the intimate, tumultuous, and ever-changing relationship with oneself.”
